Thats not a lot different to a program I wrote to run Shadow of the Unicorn on a +2a. The ZX81 is slower than a spectrum so it might not actually be slower.

Too right - the black +2A (and +2B) suffers the same incompatability as the +3, whereas the grey +2 is identical to the original 128 speccy. In a crap coloured case. :) -

I have a few Sinclair cassettes with Amstrad mentioned that say to load in 48k mode. The +2A action pack and 007 pack had 128k games. Both bank switching and the sound chip is available in 48k mode. There is a way to get back to 128k mode. -
