I don't know about the ZX Printer, but if you manage to find the similar ALPHACOM 32 printer, thermal paper is really easy to get hold of. Just buy a normal thermal fax roll and saw it in half. Works a treat :) -

I've used an Alphacom 32 printer on a +3 without a fixer board and it did work in 48K mode... I never had the official Sinclair printer though.
Although, bear in mind that the Alphacom has its own external power supply. -
