Well if you get a Midi keyboard you are not limited by the sound of it so this becomes less of an issue.
I get my computer to generate the sounds most of the time. Except the piano sound as my keyboard is very good at that. -

If you have XP Pro you can use the Local Group Policy Editor to enable the "No Auto Reboot with logged on user" policy. For Home, you can do the same with a registry key, can't remember the details but it shouldn't be hard to find via Google. -
