There are rather many 48K games with AY music, and they work fine without AY. I.e. normally there are no side effects from writing to the AY ports if there is no AY in the system. -

I loaded the TZX file of the original Firebird release of BB into my 128. I confirm it runs regularly with AY music.
This confirms your problem is related to a newly discovered bug in the Hit Squad re-release :(
