Turns out that the blanking draws quite a lot of juice. I had a fresh 3V CR2032 Lithium battery feeding the blanking. It lasted for about 1? hours before the picture begun to get darker and we were "back in black" quite fast. -

The TV's scart needs to take RGB by default or you have to be able to set it manually from the TV settings as the Spectrum doesn't provide the blanking signal that forces the scart to RGB. -
