I think what he was getting at was that you really - from a technical point of view - only need the physical cable, you do not need a phone service, but currently you have to take one if you have ADSL. The service doesn't have to be with BT though. -

Very true. If you read all of those you'll never want to buy a service from anyone. I'm with BT and i've seen a fair few bad reports about them from people but (touch wood) its been perfectly fine for me.
