One of the most common problems I have encountered is that the screws on the small pcb that sit on the back of the cassette player have come loose, take the back off and tighten those up, they are needed for a ground connection, there are two on the pcb. -

I've seen a smart Sony cassette player on eBay for about 20 notes. I've been using a Philips AQ6455 which works good and have not had any problems with it. Don't know how old it is but looks pretty recent. -

Use a PC and the program Tape2WAV.exe
This will transform your TAP into a WAV, which can be recorded by a cassette player. -
