Some progress. I realized that I had the cable connected wrong as I was using a stereo to 2 mono and I had mic instead of ear in cd player. It now finds programs but still the levels are too low. Have to try to amplify the signal. -

if you convert it to a 8bit wave it will probably sound even worse than the mp3 ;-)
Lame is a pretty good choice and there's plenty of hui front ends.
