I'm not sure if many VCRs have S-video output. VCRs have better parts than computers so composite video is not that bad from them. The main quality limitation will be your tapes. -

I run the Spectrum through a cheap TV tuner PC card. However, I was unable to tune in a decend image quality, so I modified the spectrum slightly to provide Composite Out, which the TV card accepts. Picture quality is now very good. -

No, you can just buy a good quality Composite Video to VGA converter box (one that has an RF input). AverMedia make great converters for a reasonable price. However if you are after a clear picture then soldering is the best way to go. -

I love my TC2048, with composite out and built in Kempston interface and excellent 48K Spectrum compatibility it is a very useful machine. Not to mention the excellent build quality (feels much more solid that a 48K), and improved graphics modes. -

My Spectrum is connect to my Commodore 1084 monitor via it's composite connection and as Fred says the quality is brilliant. Definitely a huge improvement from a TV.
