I'd say, verify if the problem is really on the upper memory, by loading some 16k game... I'd suggesto Deathchase 3D or Jumpin' Jack.
If they work alright, it's the memory indeed. Have it repaired!! We can't let any more Spectrum die... :) -

You might also try Aquaplane, Space Raiders and Jumping Jack.
3D Deathchase is also a great game with quite simple controls and Enduro Racer is another great motorcycle game. -
