    sounds like a modulator problem. What kind of TV are you using? for somr reason the old modulators in the spectrum really dont work well with new digital tuning Tvs. Theres some technical reson behind this but Im not really sure how it all works.

    The ZX81 won't work very well (if at all) except on the older TVs with manual tuning. If it's one of the newer(?) TVs with auto tuning or a digital tuner, you'll likely get either a very bad picture or no picture at all :(
