I had a very similar experience. 3" disks from an Amstrad could not be read reliably on a +3, even after formatting. Disk Doctor, which I bought from Dataserv Retro in the UK, solved the problem. -

I have Disk Doctor here, its only use imo is formatting disks that have maybe been formatted for systems like the Tatung which the +3 dos simply wont do (well it wouldnt for me anyway) -
