You must use a MONO cable. I have a +2 and use a tape-faker to do the trick from a Discman, so no problem to read a stereo tape, but if you have a 48K, you should use a mono cable to fit into the EAR port of the Spectrum.

You could always take the sound direct from another cassette recorder by connecting it to the ear lead from the internal cassette recorder.
