The gun for the 48K uses the EAR port. If a game works with the 48K and +2/+3 then it would have to be able to use two different ports.
How far are you holding the gun from the screen? -

nah, I only hated some badly implemented attempts in AY music. Done right, then it's harmonious joy to my ears!

You must use a MONO cable. I have a +2 and use a tape-faker to do the trick from a Discman, so no problem to read a stereo tape, but if you have a 48K, you should use a mono cable to fit into the EAR port of the Spectrum.

How do you know it's the upper RAM block that's down on your two 48K's? Also, if you want, you can use 41256 chips instead of 4164. Bit wasteful, but any port in a storm.....
