I didn't have the ROM Dissassembly book but I did learn about writing loaders etc. from fantastic "The Expert Guide to the Spectrum" book. The spine is now broken where the loading routine pages exist. -

JB1 had the hyper speedloader which was faster then regular speed loaders
JB2 had the pacmac game which unfortunately crashed on spectaculator
JB3 had some very fancy loading stripes which where multi coloured and moving horizontal. -

Crystal's loaders were indeed weird (blue/black border, loaded game and screen simultaneously) but they weren't speedloaders - well not the early ones anyway e.g. Rommel's Revenge -
