I would have said Debian or Ubuntu myself.
There are some great emulators for linux now too - some ace speccy ones as well. The guy who makes fbzx has done some great improvements recently, and it's a really neat emulator I reckon. -

If memory serves, HAM256 pictures don't display at all in FBZX. This usually indicates an error in the OTIR emulation. Despite what the Z80 manual says, the first thing that happens is the DEC B.
