You're not missing anything. Dunny accidently built at least the last couple of releases using the old contention/floating bus code. Believe me, your game does not flicker at all when built with the correct source :) -

Port $FF is an unattached port - it will reliably return $FF on a read in +2a/+3 hardware, and floating bus results for any prior models.
