no the smart card will work on any version of the spectrum from the 48k rubber keyboard to the plus 3, i have personality tried it on an issue 4 48k plus and a plus 2B 128k and a harlequin 48k and it worked without fault -

Well I've modded my plus 2a to accept external cassette and that loads fine so does the harlequin 48k and my new plus 3 feom both external cassette and pc. -
