eBay is probably your best bet, and car boot sales, even charity shops. You used to be able to get them from Gamestation stores (in the UK), but since Game took over that's been pretty-much phased out worst luck (got my grey +2 there). -

The CM8833-II does NOT have a VGA port. A lot of them have a DB9 that accepts RGB. There are lots of models of the CM8833, so it is hard to be specific. I would get a composite mod on a spectrum and use that. -

I have the grey +2 model, not the +2A. I cannot hear the loading sounds at all.
I opened the spectrum up, and the connections look fine. I will attempt your suggested steps and get back to you.
