It is the Kempston issue discussed here since it works on Spectaculator if you enable Kempston emulation (keyboard or real joystick)

Hi Jon, are you saying that Spin can't emulate Kempston via keyboard?
I wonder about that, because yes everything is fine on other emulators on my laptop..including as you mentioned, Speculator :) -

It's a Kempston problem, yes. You just need to hack the game and find the right POKE to reverse the Kempston joystick detection that occurred before the original snapshot was created :p
Oh, and it is only one simple POKE required ;) -

Well I haven't been able to get it to run yet -- crashes every time. I think I've turned off all attached peripherals (Kempston Mouse emulation certainly does something) but will have to try again later. -
