If the IF1 case shows signs of melting or is deformed, stay well away.
Replacement ULA's are available but are about ?15, and that's about the top end value of an IF1 on its own anyway.

Yes, files greater than 16K can be written. However, using an IF2 is just one possibility. You can also use an IF1 or the serial or keypad port on a 128K Speccy. -

As for loading from tape, can you not consider making a part of the SD card act like a Microdrive and you emulate the IF1 instead (that's what I was going to do!) So you just copy the snapshots to the SD card and load from there? -
