XP is a godsend, much better than previous versions particularly 9x/ME.
Don't believe the anti-SP2 hype though. Install it nice and early (i.e. before your machine is riddled with problems) and it'll make life sooooooo much easier. -

Of course you could buy something like Amiga Forever and it'll install everything you need with config files and all that. Also also include legal ROMs for which to use it.
It might be the best option if you're finding it hard to set it up ? -
