I would go for the ribbon connector as per documentation. The spectrum overhangs the Interface 1 and may prevent the solid connector pushing fully home. A flexible joint is desirable anyway.

R-Type will work with a Kempston Interface, just press Fire on the joystick and it selects it automatically.
It also auto-selects if you do the same with a Sinclair Interface 2 or with the Interface 1 Joystick\keyboard setup. -

You can just used the emulated Interface 1 to LOAD *b it using the file on your PC as an input file (Tools->Options, ZX Interface 1 tab).
