    IY is used by the rom interrupt routine. If you have im1 interrupts running your program is going to crash.

    If it makes a routine faster to use IY then you should use it.
    As long as you save IY before you modify it and restore the contents before it's needed by a ROM routine or an interrupt handler you should be ok.
