I've only ever used keys to play isometric games, I feel that's a better "fit" to the isometric model than a joystick. -

Only 3D Ultimate game that had any playability for me was Gunfright.
Some isometric games are good, but just like with modern games 2D platformers are by far the best. 2 of my favourite ever Spectrum games are isometric (Cyclone + Quazatron) -

I do like Knight Lore, one of the best Spectrum games ever. First time I played it, I was amazed, a very good game.
Most isometric games are adventures. If you don't like explore, using items, maps etc, you won't like games like KL. -
