The hole appears to be where the reset button was... Indeed on the left of the keyboard. Could be the plastic button part is missing, or the whole switch. Maybe if it's an upgraded version, the upgrader didn't bother to wire the button to the mainboard. -

I read somewhere that the only difference in the the 48K and the plus was the added reset button and the change from rubber keys to plastic keys, which changed the looks of the computer a bit. Apart from that, I don't think there was any change. -
