    The IX/IY regs seem to be fine - the system wouldn't boot at all without them, and it's not the interrupt routine that crashes, I've checked that.

    The bit I'm most proud of is using the L register for two tasks, as the index for the byte table and also to store the mask. If that hadn't worked I don't think it would have been possible to do without using the alternate registers.

    you need to call FP_TO_BC
    which puts a sixteen bit integer into
    the BC register.
    STK_TO_BC sounds correct but in fact gets
    two 8 bit parameters from the stack with error checking.
