Assuming that you can press a key and continue the game, then it *is* in pause mode.
From what I recall, JSW paused automatically when your willy was idle for any length of time.

I totally agree with Vampyre: Manic Miner is a cult game.
JSW is a nice game, but some bugs are really frustrating and prevent it from being a masterpiece. -

For me, JSW. But the second version.
It was top-class but I still like Manic Miner.
It's like Nintendo and Sega developing into one console: The best of both worlds on one system. And Manic Miner and JSW did that for the Speccy :)
