    You could try removing the plug coming from internal tape player on spectrum PCB and temporarily connect the wires of new audio jack to pins 4 (ear) and 1/5 (ground) to test if ULA picks up external audio signal.

    You meant the 'almost cut out' piece of plastic on the Speccy between the EAR and TV sockets ? Unless that's a trick of the light :) I'm not sure. It half looks like the same vertical position as the TV/Mod out socket.
