It could be done loading the screens from disk. After all, they release Maniac Mansion for the C64 in disk format, why not on the Spectrum?

I've tried both them. Not on a Speccy, there are too many messy timing calculations to do, but a C program that outputs a WAV file. Gasman's method sounds too noisy but Alcoholics Unanimous' method sounds just fine
