I once blew up my Speccy when I disconnected the interface without switching the power off first (tough lesson!). I had the same gray screen with a black square. When I had it fixed the bill stated that the RAM was changed. -

As an additional note to my earlier post, Operation Wolf was a corking Coin-op conversion if ever I've seen one. I had it with the light phaser (Bullseye on the B side) and it was an excellent game.
