No, I wasn't measuring in series properly. I have done so now (desoldered the psu jack and put the multimeter in series there). Current is 780ma which is a little above your range. -

This was a tricky game in the arcade. I think my 80s teenage self got to the third level once (as a fluke) but I never seemed to have quite enough energy to usually get past the first boss. Greate remake though and a definite improvement.
