One thing you might want to do, then, is get hold of some breadboard - and a collection of 74-series logic, and a 7805 regulator (so you can get 5 volts), a bag of 50 or so 5 volt LEDs and experiment for a bit. You'll find it very instructive. -

I guess the answer is yes. The voltage regulator have more charges attached to it (more memory, the AY, the bank switching logic), so more current is drained and more heat is generated. -
