    One thing you might want to do, then, is get hold of some breadboard - and a collection of 74-series logic, and a 7805 regulator (so you can get 5 volts), a bag of 50 or so 5 volt LEDs and experiment for a bit. You'll find it very instructive.

    You seem to have been pretty thorough so apologies if this is a stupid question.

    Have you checked the power supply? ie what is coming out of the voltage regulator on the board, not the powerpack.

    Do you happen to know why the 128 generated more heat? Did the voltage regulator have to work harder, thereby getting hotter?

    I guess the answer is yes. The voltage regulator have more charges attached to it (more memory, the AY, the bank switching logic), so more current is drained and more heat is generated.
