    So when folk say something was written in assembler they are talking opcodes? What do they use to work in opcodes, they must have to write within some shell that understands those codes.

    An assembler is used which converts the opcodes into 'machine code'. I suggest using Spin which has a very good built in assembler. This will take away a lot of the hard work.
