    Buy a cheap multimeter, and use it every time you're in doubt about polarity. You don't need to spend more than ca ?10 for a crappy meter that suits this purpose.

    As Orange says, you don't need anything clever for the 48K (or 128K/+2 for that matter) - any consumer 9V supply will do. Just make sure you get the polarity right!
