    But if I could find a native, American PSU that output the proper DC voltage, then there would be no overheating. (As opposed to putting the Euro PSU on a power converter that changed voltage but not Hz.) Am I mistaken here?

    A 9v power supply should do.

    We used to power a MegaDrive using an ancient 48k ZX psu so you might be able to do it the other way round with no problems.
