Turn on Kempston Joystick in the emulator. This is a typical behaviour when joystick is not connected but the game tries to read its input.

Are there any emulators that allow 2 (or more) players over the net?

I guess, 1 machine running the emulator but serving the screen up to 2 or more PCs and accepting keyboard/joystick input from each PC.

Someone on another forum I read has asked for good Speccy ... , maybe make some sounds and read keyboard input... that sort of thing ...
