it does it every time I set the output tape (on the alt f7 panel) to a tzx, or tap format file. Realspec won't read the file back afterwards. but saving as a wav works no problem.
May be its just my machine playing up? -

Doesn't fix Ghosts'n'goblins on my +2A unfortunetly :( It is strange that it works fine in an emulator (SPIN, Spect., Realspec) under +2A emulation, but crashes mid-game on the real thing. Same with Wec LeMans...

I use Spin,Realspec,zx32,R80,x128 ,winxzx,wspecem14 , (old emus).
My spectrum files are associated with Spin at the moment.
I use Real spectrum mostly, because it is integrated in SGD and it works under WinXP. -

RealSpec also allows RZX->AVI (it's what I use for the documentaries), but it's not compatible with all RZX files, so your mileage may vary.
