It's because the game code has a decryptor which uses the ROM and in the original 48k ROM, $386e-$3cff contains $ff which are not present in the 48K mode 128k. Hence, it nearly works but not quite. -

Most dual drive IFs I have seen in NL had a 40Tr drive and a 80Tr drive. I started that way too, but soon dumped the 40Tr as it ruined too many disks.
