The original graphics were probably reverse engineered from the c64 multicolor ones. Basically removing the colour that was used for shading and replaced with a stipple effect. @Einar & leespoons: Definitely a lucky case of the resized original falling neatly into attribute block boundaries resulting in an easy trace, colour and dithered shading job. :)
