Have you tried connecting a pair of headphones to the sound socket at the back of the machine. If you get sound through as normal then there cannot be much wrong. Are you using a modern tv as well -

Nope, as you say the internal tape deck is now out of the equation.
All you need to do is to select 'Tape Loader' or LOAD"" as normal, then start playback of the audio from whatever you've got connected to the tape/sound socket.
