If you have to boot in pure DOS you can blame Gates. If you have to boot in pure DOS but can't do this withut juggling bootdisks then you should really blame Gates! I miss "good old" Windows 98 with its easy DOS access.

The Speccy 128K version did have speech through it's internal sound chip.
There was "Missile Launched", "Energy Low" and "Docking Complete".
The speech works fine on RealSpectrum, SpecEmu and ZX32 (v2.00.04.04) on my machine.
