Although Jonathan's website states that only Spectaculator and Fuse support .szx it should be noted that SPin, SpecEmu and Spud now all support the format. -

Don't see why you couldn't use a swap partition to decompress to a temporary location and load it from there. -

fuse-utils's snapconv can write out uncompressed SZXs. It even seems to work. -
