    Since this trick is done while BASIC interpreter is running, we don't need to store registers. BASIC system variables are enough. Anyway, loading and saving procedures scratch most of registers.

    You might get a different result to what you were expecting though, especially if you use ROM routines or system variables, and remember that the ZX81's character-set was not ASCII but it's own.
