The next best "suspect" is the transistor ZTX650. Can only find it on ebay since it is obsolete.
The tape recorder strength thing is probably due to worn out rubber belt. Easy to find and replace from most electronic shops. -

I agree with ingo. Althow i have found more than one bad ula on many spectrum repairs, i would say it is a rare event.

Well since its the ztx650 that is going out, it should be the 12V line right? Though the fact that when i have the tr5 out the tr4 doesnt blow makes me think (according to the schematic) that it may have something to do with the +5 line.... or not? -
