You'll need the rucksack later in the game. If you're on the right track ;-) the train will stop between stations, giving you the chance to escape.
If you think the game is fast paced so far, wait until you're being chased around the moor ! -

I think I'm on the right train. it stopped between stations (sheep on crossing), I'm in a clump of heather, I can dig the soft soil or go up but always, on about the third instruction I get spotted/caught. -
