Unfortunately I have no win98 installed this time, only running it on VmWare / Connectix VirtualPC and there it seems working normally. Are you sure you just did not changed some effects? May be it become better if you turn off Smooth Scale effect? -

Options -> Images -> Turn off the Byteloader. You can leave edge loading on, but the byteloader doesn't support Rainbow Islands as yet, we've not added it.
Hopefully it'll be in for the next official release.

It's not the byte loader per se with those two - you need to turn off the autostart/stop for these.
We'll work on that shortly :)

Not sure wot you mean, but when you use RealSpec to load the TRDOS game there should be an option to turn off the read-only protection. Disable and run.
