As the writer of the MM clone I can confirm that it is JavaScript. The Java bit was simply to rip the level graphics and room layouts from the Speccy original (and a handful of unofficial sequels).

You need to save your UDG's and reload them after making them or remake them in the BASIC again.

on plain spectrum 48k, right after resetting PRINT PEEK 65530 will return 66, as it is the 3rd byte in the bitmap of the 'U' UDG character.
i suspect he wanted to write PRINT PEEK 65535, which returns 0. -
