Hmmm, if the Border did not change, this means that the Amplifier of tape deck is death, or the ULA in Spectrum did not recieve any signals.
You coulr try the other tape deck to find this out. -

Ramsofts' Real Spectrum emultor in DOS emulated the ULA Snow effect. Perhaps give that a try ?
