Ore you could use the exellent option in spectaculator to remap your joystick's button to keys like Q W Space, you should be able to trick the game into thinking that you are using the keyboard!!

The +3s has nothing to do with the trick I described. It works because the picture is interlaced. You will see half of the picture from ram bank 5 and half from ram bank 7.
